What should I say? Coworker told me she & her husband is separating ?

My coworker who originally invited me to her superbowl party cancelled it because she said things aren't good @ home with her husband & they are separating. First of all... Why would she tell me they are separating and no one else. Second of all, what should I say to her? Idk how to console someone in this situation...
