Do I have to have the cap on to use my MuVu v100 mp3/flashdrive or can it be uncapped?

Like, the cover that goes over the usb connector. Can that be off and work? Because I lost it and I have no idea. (It was my dad's and he let me borrow it but he doesn't have the rest of it).
